Chapter twenty

Distractions and Revelations

Rae

Yona comes to the house the next day, and the next. Since I’m mostly eating and sleeping around working a few hours every day, I don’t mind. He says he wants to check on me, but my feeling is that it’s driven by guilt at what his brother did.

If that’s the case, I’ll let him do it. His brother is an ass and Yona brings me food and groceries, so it saves me from going out.

On the third day, my little beasties bring me some particularly interesting information. There’s a news report of four bodies being found in an abandoned warehouse in Oklahoma City, killed in an execution style murder.

When I pull up the police reports logged on the scene, I’m shocked to discover one of them is Julio Cardena, the leader of the Grande Barrio Centrale, or GBC. GBC is the largest Mexican gang in the southern US and Cardena rarely leaves Mexico.

Another of the men is Ramon Esquivel, believed to be Cardena’s top man in the US. The other two haven’t been identified, but have gang tats that identify them as GBC members.

Switching to a different screen, I search through the logs of information from Tai Dang and his crew. He’s the most logical person to take on the GBC in the Oklahoma City Metro.

Sure enough, there’s traffic between him and his top soldiers about a welcoming committee. Dang is making some big moves and not limiting himself to the Oklahoma City metro. There are signs he’s also putting up a significant presence in Tulsa.

Does he mean to take over the entire state? He’s the last kind of presence I want here around Uncle Max. Or really, in Oklahoma at all. If Dang really is trying to posture as a big player, it wouldn’t take much for him to find Max and learn of his ties to Boston and make an example of him.

I’m going to have to monitor him closely. Maybe this is why I’m stuck here. It seems the Universe is intent on keeping me here for a while.

However, being stuck at home to give my body time to heal has really put a crimp in my ability to get things done. I still need to deal with my stolen motorcycle and the replacement door for the cabin is taking forever to come in.

Standing still has never been something I’m good at, but maybe it’s time I learn how. At least in short bursts, anyway. Would it be so bad to have a permanent home nest that I can fly to and rest between projects?

I did it for a few months in Kansas City, so why can’t I do it here? It was nice when I kept returning to Kansas City and looking back, I can’t remember why I finally left for good. Now I can’t remember why I decided to leave.

The next morning, I decide to test my level of healing and go on my run to the coffee shop. I don’t do too bad, so it’s time to get back to my to-do list.
